Staff Report

Cold temperatures coupled with rain and snow have again forcing Ohio racetracks to cancel shows this weekend.

Sharon Speedway has postponed its 89th season opener. This Friday’s show that features the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series has been moved to Monday, July 2.

“We couldn’t catch a break with the weather,” stated Sharon GM Dave Willoughby in a press release. “It’s been a very wet and cold March and April. We needed some dry weather this week, but unfortunately it’s been cold with and rain and snow. That coupled with Friday’s high temperature only in the mid 40s and dropping into the 30s during race time just isn’t conducive. We’re thankful to have an opportunity to bring Lucas Oil back in the summer during the Fourth of July week, and have optimal racing conditions. This will now create a mini Ohio Speedweek for Late Models that hopefully fans and racers can make plans for.”

Sharon Speedway will now look to open on Saturday, April 28 with a show that features The Modified Tour for the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply big blocks paying $2,000 to-win.

Wet weather has also forced Limaland Motorsports Park to cancel the “Season Opening Shootout” Presented by Smith Boughan Mechanical, Friday, April 20th. Limaland will now look to open its 83rd season on Friday, April 27 with the “Spring Fling” presented by S&S Volvo.

Fremont Speedway has bumped up start times for their Saturday opener in hopes of taking advantage of warmer weather. All gates will open at 1 p.m. with racing set to start at 3:30 p.m.

“We have fantastic fans and race teams and we don’t want them to have to endure the colder evening temperatures,” said Fremont Speedway Promoter Rich Farmer in a press release. “If you look at the hourly forecast it’s in the 50s by race time.”

Saturday’s season opener at Fremont will feature the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series Presented by Ohio Logistics for the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints, The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints, Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks and the McCullough Industries Late Models. Fans who bring their ticket stub from the Friday, April 20 show at Attica Raceway Park will get $1 off general admission.

Waynesfield Raceway Park has also moved start times in an attempt to take advantage of the weather on Saturday. Pit gates open at 3 p.m., the grandstands open at 4 p.m., the track opens at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m. Adult general admission is just $12. Kids aged 11-15 are admitted for $6 with everyone under the age of ten admitted for FREE. Pit access is available to anyone for $25.
