Back in March a picture surfaced of the Gillingham 5 sitting in the shop nowhere near ready to race.  Last night, all of the work that went in to getting the car ready paid off.  Danny Shirey won both his heat race and the feature at Lorain County Speedway.

The feature was led to the green flag by Jonathon Lesiecki and Jake Smith but it was Shirey who shot to the lead after the first lap.  But the field was quickly slowed by a caution for the 21 of Matt Palmer when smoke appeared from the car and stopped on the bottom of the track.  Palmer would not return.  When the green flag came back out the top five was Shirey, AJ Lesiecki, Jonathon Lesiecki, Wiggins in the Henes 36, and Preston Walker in the May Motorsports 7.  Shirey was out in front but the car on the move was the 30 of Talon Stephens.  Within three laps, Talon found himself in third and was starting to work on the 77.  Another caution would come out on lap eight for the 12 of Jake Smith when he spun coming off of turn four.   The green would quickly come back out and the 30 and 77 resumed their battle for second.  On lap ten the 30 moved down low in turns one and two and there was contact between the two cars with the 30 spinning and the 77 going down the back stretch in a shower of sparks.  Stephens would return after replacing the right rear but AJ Lesiecki’s night would be done with a damaged wing.  The red flag was brought out for clean-up.  When racing resumed with Shirey continuing to lead while the 11 of Kyle Edwards was able to get by the 36 of Jeremie Wiggins, who was having a great run for his first time in a supermodified was now in third.  McVetta was then able to get around Wiggins for third and then Paller followed the 22 into fourth.  But out in front Shirey was hooked on rails and no one was able to catch him.  When the checkered fell it was Shirey, Edwards, McVetta, Paller, Wiggins in the top five.

Danny was very happy with his day.  “We got some laps in and kept tweaking the car and it paid off!”  During the red flag Danny said you have to stay calm and go with the flow.  He said once they went back racing the car didn’t lose stagger and was running great.

The Midwest Supermodified Series presented by CMC Trucking next goes to Sandusky Speedway on July 7th.
