Conneaut, OH (August 7, 2020): Another beautiful summer day greeted fans and competitors at Raceway 7 for the seventh night of racing at the northeast Ohio 3/8 mile oval. Breyton Santee took over the lead six laps into the RUSH Late Model feature and cruised to his first Raceway 7 win of 2020. Breyton Santee collected his first RUSH Late Model win of the year and Casey Bowers drove to his first victory of the season in the E-Mod feature. Dustin Demattia won his first Economod feature of the year. Defending Mini Stock Champion Mark Lawrence prevailed for his third victory of 2020 and defending Street Stock champion Pat Fielding returned to Victory Lane for the first time this season.
Opening the night’s feature race action were the Economods with Garrett Calvert and Matt Alexander leading the way. A red flag slowed the race immediately when a fan suffered a non-racing health issue and had to be transported to an area hospital. When green was shown it was Alexander leading Calvert, Dustin Demattia, last week’s winner Mitchell Wright, and Billy Cunningham. Twelfth-starting Nate Young advanced to seventh by lap three when Mike Hudzik slowed to a stop in turn three. Alexander then led Demattia, Calvert, Cunningham, and Wright to lap four when Judson Fell, showing heavy body damage, stopped on the front straight. At five laps it was Alexander, Demattia, Calvert, Wright, and opening night winner Zack Lenart. A yellow at lap five when Cunningham spun in turn four slowed the race again with Lenart now fourth over Wright. At lap eight the caution was for Dale Reiser and Pat Drennan in turn four. Cautions at laps nine and ten again slowed the event. At eleven it was Alexander still dominating over Demattia, with Lenart and Wright entertaining fans with a side by side duel for third. At twelve laps Alexander’s impressive run ended when he got sideways in turn one and hit hard by Wright, who had no place to go. Wright was able to continue and only lost one spot in the incident while Alexander needed towed from the scene. For the green it was now Demattia, Lenart, Wright, Jeremy Double, and Nate Young. Wright came to second at lap twelve and Double to third at thirteen and Young to fourth at fourteen when the final yellow of eight appeared for Alex Brockway, spun in turn four. At the finish it was Demattia, Wright, Double, Young, and Lenart.
The Mini Stocks started with Mike Barr and Zoey Gill on row one but it was third-starting Alex Siekkinen leading the way after one lap with Barr, Zoey Gill, Cale Sousa, and Derrick Randolph filling out the top five. At lap three Dillon Speer was the leader with Siekkinen second, Gill third, points leader and three time 2020 winner Jessica Harvey fourth, and Alan Sousa fifth. At halfway the order was Speer, Lawrence, Siekkinen, Harvey, and Gill. Speer was pulling away, enjoying a half-straight lead at halfway when Tristan Start stopped in turn four, erasing his advantage. For the green Lawrence was lined up right behind Speer with Harvey third, and Siekkinen fourth. Siekkinen apparently suffered at flat left front tire and pitted on the caution as the field prepared for the green, advancing Gill to fourth and Sousa to fifth. At nine laps Lawrence and Speer were even for the lead with Harvey third, Gill fourth, and Sousa fifth. At ten laps Lawrence had the lead by a car-length. Siekkinen, who had rejoined the race after a trip pitside, came to a stop in turn four and needed pushed to the pit. The restart was pulled back when Josie Kish stalled on the track. At the finish it was Lawrence, Speer, Harvey, Gill, and Bondy Stoyer.
E-Mods had Casey Bowers and Randy Hall on the front row for the start with Bowers grabbing the lead but yellow flew on lap one for Mark Titus and Dan McEwen. When one lap was finished it was Bowers leading Hall, Alan Atkinson, 2018 champion Troy Johnson, and opening night winner Brent Rhebergen. Hall and Atkinson were side by side at lap three for second with Rhebergen pulling to fourth on the back stretch of lap six. Gary Eicher came to fifth at lap eight. Meanwhile, Bowers was speeding away with the lead, up to 2.693 seconds at lap nine. At halfway Bowers led Hall, Atkinson, Rhebergen, and Eicher. Defending champion Mike Kinney was fifth at thirteen laps. Bowers increased his lead to 4.908 seconds at the checkers. Rhebergen settled for second with Kinney third, Hall fourth, and Atkinson fifth.
The RUSH Late Models had Cory Sines and Breyton Santee leading the way to green with Sines leading lap one, followed by Santee, two-time winner Matt Latta, July 3rd winner Jason Genco, and Billy Henry. Alex Haight spun in turn two on lap four with Tyler Allison also involved. At four laps Latta was second with Santee back to third, Henry fourth, and Genco fifth when Haight and Allison both spun in turn four. Santee and Latta were even at the line at lap five for second with Santee holding it at six laps. Santee then got by Sines at turn two on lap ten. At halfway the front five were Santee, Sines, Latta, Genco, and former champion Kyle Zimmerman, up from tenth at the start. At eleven Santee narrowly avoided disaster when the car he was putting a lap down, Tyler Allison, spun directly in front of him. At twelve laps Latta was second with Sines third over Genco and Bossard, from ninth on the grid. Yellow flew at lap fifteen for Joe Howell, stopped in turn two, then, on green, John Stockdale spun in turn four. Buck Mason stopped against the turn two wall at lap eighteen then Howell spun in turn four at the white flag, the final caution of the race. The top five wound up as Santee, Latta, Sines, Genco, and Bossard.
The final feature of the night was for the Street Stocks. Pole-sitter Pat Fielding, the defending class champion, led from the drop of the green with Alan Dellinger, Joe Stajnragh, Larry Kugel, and Paul Davis filling out the top five. Caution was shown at three laps for Steve Horvath, the apparent victim of a broken right front tie rod. Dellinger was challenging for the lead at lap three but Fielding, looking for his first win of the season, was strong and held him off. At lap five the top five were Fielding, Dellinger, Kugel, opening night winner Davis, and Stajnragh, the winner June 26. At six laps Mike Miller, with help, spun, slowing the race under yellow. On lap seven Dellinger took over at the front, but began smoking heavily in turn one of lap eight, apparently suffering engine failure, and retiring to the infield. For the resumption of the race it was Fielding in front with Kugel, last week’s winner Jason Black now third, Davis, and Stajnragh. Turns one and two were the scene of the next caution, for Mike Horton, David Snyder, Jason Jones, and Jonathan Davis with problems in turn two. Another yellow a lap later slowed the race when Snyder and Jones again had issues, this time in turns three and four. Fielding still led at lap ten with Kugel and Black side by side with Kugel showing just 0.062 second ahead. Couchenour was fourth at this point with Paul Davis fifth. Black moved to second at lap eleven. At twelve laps Fielding was extending his lead, now at 1.240 seconds. Couchenour was now third with Kugel fourth and Davis fifth. The final caution was with two to go when Jonathan Davis spun in turn four. Fielding finished only 0.287 second ahead on Black at the checkers with Couchenour, Kugel, and Paul Davis filling out the top five.
